The Dogs Who Showed Us the Future of CBD

By Bree Blazak

In 2018, New York was just beginning to tinker with hemp and CBD, a frontier space somewhere between farm field and pharmacy. That was when Eric, my husband, secured one of the state’s earliest CBD licenses. He bought a geo-thermal factory near our home, hired a chemist, and set to work developing products that—at the time—sounded like magic: CBD research promised relief from inflammation, joint pain, skin problems, anxiety, even insomnia.

But the real revelation didn’t come in a lab. It came from our dogs.

At that time, one of our Golden Doodles (Gracie) was 5 years old and had been diagnosed with Lyme disease. For her, the symptoms were visible swelling in her back knee joints and she started having problems going up even one flight of stairs at our house. She could no longer walk with us as she would be basically in bed the entire next day. We started giving her the CBD powder from my husband's factory and within a few weeks we noticed she was walking better, limping less and generally seemed to be feeling better!  We started taking her for short walks and now, at almost 10, she goes on long hikes with me and runs on the beach for an hour almost daily. It was such a profound improvement - we were thrilled! Here are some pics of Gracie within the last 3 years below:

Our other Golden Doodle (Ketch) was 10 when he stopped eating or drinking anything one weekend and was throwing up. Of course it was a weekend so we had to drive for an hour to get him to the emergency vet clinic. They told us he had fairly advanced liver and spleen cancer (including some significant tumors) and sent us off with about 5 medications and told us we had a couple weeks with him (maybe). We were devastated. The meds (including prednisone) made him appear frail, weak and really sick seemlingly overnight.  We got him weaned off the prednisone and other meds and started giving him the same full spectrum CBD powder we had started giving to Gracie a few years back.  Within about a month, his physical strength and spark returned and his quality of life was back.  Our neighbor is a veterinarian, a very kind man who cares deeply for his patients and their families, helped us by offering to scan with ultrasound every few weeks or so to check on the tumor growth.  At one point about 5 months after his original diagnosis, our vet noticed the tumors were not nearly as large as they had been.  He was surprised at his general health and that he was not declining faster.  We had Ketch with us for almost 2 years after the original cancer diagnosis when they estimated that he only had a couple weeks to live. What a gift!  Eventually cancer took hold and we had to say goodbye but we are forever grateful for his time with us and that we were able to give him a good quality of life. The only thing we were giving him was our CBD powder.

Here's our boy Ketch - forever in our hearts!

After these two first hand experiences, we shared with some of our friends and neighbors about our CBD when it would come up that their pet had a health issue. They would tell us how they were struggling to manage with traditional veterinary prescription meds, and we would always offer for them to try our product. We have seen many dogs improve and heal from various health issues like: chronic skin conditions, lack of mobility / joint pain, and decided it was time to share this product with the rest of the world.  It is not a silver bullet, it is not a guarantee to help every dog's health issue - but there has been enough scientific and personal evidence in our own experience and those of our friends that we believe it is worth trying if your best friend is hurting! There is no down-side, no side effects, no interactions with other prescription medications. (Check out our FAQs page for more on the science!)

My husband Eric and I have been married for 25 years and have 2 young adult children.  We are so excited to share our product and hope that you and your dog (or dogs!) have similarly excellent results to share back with us!  We love to hear your stories - keep 'em coming!
